Draft Of Titles
These are the different designs of what the title of the magazine could look like. As you can see at first I started with a simple, plain font with a plain white fill colour, this did not look very exiting and was not I wanted. I then started to change certain colours and fonts until I found a kind of base of what I want my title to look like. Once I found the font and colour I wanted my title to be I added a white line affect and increased the stroke weight on the white outline, until I made it exactly how I wanted it.
Analysis Of Double Page Spread 2

When you first see the article you are attracted by the huge amount of different and bright colours. This makes the article look exiting and interesting to read so when the audience see this page they would like to continue to read it and find out what the article is about, whereas if the page was dull and looked boring this will not attract the reader to read it as much.
Normally when looking at an article straight away you have a slight idea of what music genre the article is based on without knowing what magazine it is or by looking at the front cover, however as this article has not got any band artist we have to try and guess from the various pictures on the article of what type of magazine this article is for which makes the reader want to read it more.
The language that is used in the article suggests that the target audience for this article is aimed at people aged 18+. This is because the topics that are being discussed in the article are related to adult activities such as clubbing, alcohol and bars, it will also be illegal if anyone younger then 18 are related to these topics.
There are certain words that are used constantly throughout the article that are inappropriate for young children to read such as ‘shit’.
The article starts with the phrase ‘Welcome to Rotterdam’s Sustainable dance club’ This is a smart idea that the writer did, as using the word ‘welcome’ shows that the article is welcoming you to read the article and be part of it.
The way the editor tried to bring enjoyment into the article is not only by the colours and pictures but also by the funky font that the title and the first letter of the article are written in. Using a groovy font makes the article look less boring and more exiting. However the editor uses simple font to write the rest of the article as it is simpler to read and looks less complicated.
The double page spread differs from most ordinary articles and there is not just two pages but three. The first page just contains the title, subheading and also a few pictures of what the article is going to be about. The second and third page contains the written information about the article; however they still contain images to make the article look more interesting.
The sort of tone that the magazine is using when addressing the reader is that the reader is a member of the in-crowd and understands the topics that are mentioned.

Analysis Of Double Spread

From reading the article I believe the age target for this magazine is aimed at people aged 16 – 24yrs old. This is because many people in this age categories will be familiar with his music and would be interested to read about him. I also think that the article is aimed at this age group because of what the artist is wearing. GZA is wearing a baggy white top, baggy trousers and branded sports trainers. These are items of clothing that many of the youths and young adults are wearing nowadays so for the artist to wear what many people in this age categories it shows that he is there age which means that the reader can relate to what he is saying.
The language that is used for the article also tells us which age category this article is aimed at. For example there are certain words that are mentioned quite a lot in just the article that would be inappropriate for young children to read such as ‘shit and f**k’ and also many people older then 24 would not want read such words as they might have young children and would not like to see there children reading articles that would contain swear words.
There are also certain words that reflect to the genre of music. For example in the Hip – Hop world there are certain ‘slang’ words that many people often say such as ‘he ain’t my boy’ meaning that he is not my friend. People who are familiar with Hip – Hop music will be able to understand what he is trying to say, this also gives a sort of relationship between GZA and the reader as some people might not understand what he is saying and if you do then there is a sort of connection between the artist and the reader.
The editor also tries to promote GZA by saying certain words about him such as ‘the best emcee’ and also ‘pure genius’. Using phrases like this not only makes the artist sound good but also the article as they have managed to get ‘the best emcee’ on their magazine and also have a interview with him.
The colours that are used in the article are very simple and also matched the items of clothing GZA is wearing. We get the white background because of the top the artist is wearing, we get the black writing because of his trousers and we get red writing because of the red on his trainers. Using simple colours also make the magazine seem childish and serious, as if the magazine used loads of bright and colourful colours then we would not take the interview serious.
The style of text is very plain and easy to read. The editor of the magazine was really smart and made all the good, interesting bits bigger and in a different colour compared to the other sections of the page. This is very effective as these sections are what the reader will see first and if they see eye catching phrases or interesting facts then the reader will want to read the whole interview.
The image that is used in the article, a picture of GZA, is presented to the audience through various ways. For example the item of clothing he is wearing is something that is many people who read the magazine are familiar of wearing. Also the way the artist is posing is a very typical pose that many males use when posing for a picture.
The double page interview is laid out so that the interview is spread on one page and the image of the artist is spread out on the second page. This is very useful as the picture has been made big enough that it can be used as a poster and also having the interview just on one page makes it look less boring and long, because if there was loads of writing the reader might not be bothered to read both the pages of writing.
The tone that the magazine is using when addressing the reader is an informed intelligent fan. This basically means that the reader can relate to what GZA is saying and also understand his language such as the slang he uses.

The article does sometimes demand prior knowledge when reading the article because sometimes there are certain slang words that are mentioned that people who are familiar with the Hip – Hop genre will be able to understand. Also GZA was part of a well – known crew Call Wu Tang Clang so if you know who this crew are then you will know much more about what GZA is talking about as he mentions the Wu Tang Clang several times.
In conclusion the article suits the front cover and magazine genre.
School Magazine And Comments

This is a mock version of my school magazine. I created this through Adobe Illustrator and also edited the pictures through Adobe Photoshop. The layout of the magazine is very plain, simple and easy to understand and read. I have made the main image the only image and the largest image on the magazine. The main image is of a very well known girl in the school, so when the reader first sees the magazine they will see the main image and they will want to get the magazine as they know who is on the front cover and would like to find out why.
I have made the main teaser the biggest writing on the page, this is because when the reader sees that the magazine has published some prom pictures the reader will want to get the magazine and quickly find the prom pictures section.
I have also made the price of the magazine quite large, this is because it is very rare for a magazine to be free so when to the reader sees that the magazine is free more people would want to get it and read it.
Contents

This is the mock contents page for the school magazine. Again it is very plain and simple and only contains the main topics, unlike an ordinary magazine which contains nearly every topic that is in the rest of the magazine. I have kept the colour scheme very basic and not so bright however not so dull.
If I was to make improvements to the magazine then I would add loads more topics that are available in the magazine. I would include various images the make the magazine look more appealing and also use a more exiting fonts.

Contents Page Analysis 2
NME is a very popular rock and roll magazine. It has been publishing for over 50yrs and is now one of the best selling music magazine in the world.
When first looking at the contents page we first notice that the editor has added a graphic effect to make the contents page look scruffy and almost newspaper like. This is a very typical effect that is used in most music magazines and which is to relate the contents pages to the style of music. For example as this is a Rock and Indie magazine the editor knows that people who enjoy this type of music are known to be a kind of messy, very loud and all over the place, so creating the contents page in the kind of style to the music genre the reader feels as if their is a sort of relationship between the reader and the magazine.
Another thing that we are instantly attracted to is by the huge variety of different bright colours spread out all over the page. There are many bright colours as it trying to make the magazine look exiting and fun to read. The editor has made all the different article topics that are in the magazine in a different colours and in their own separate boxes, this is very effective as it makes it much easier for the reader to find what they are looking for in the magazine.
The images on the contents page have also made the contents look much interesting as the way the editor has constructed the images on the page. For example the images have been placed next to their related text boxes. This is useful as you can also see what the articles will be about without actually going to the page first.
The editor has also made the some of the images tilted. this is to make the contents page look more interesting and more
The artist that are featured on the contents page have been spread out all over the page so that the reader can see that there are many artist that are featured in the rest of the magazine. They have made the main feature of the magazine the biggest picture on the contents page so that the reader will be able to see that first.
Most of the writing has been put to the left hand side in which the information has been separated into different sections and into different colours. Writing that is been written bigger then rest or is not on the left hand side have been written so that it is related to it's near by picture.
The magazine logo is located at the top left of the page, however is not as dominant as the image in the centre of the page. A promotional feature is located at the bottom of the page, in which it promotes the magazine itself. Promoting the magazine makes the reader assume that this is the best magazine to buy and has more special features then others.
In conclusion the contents page suits the music genre.
Analysis Of Contents Page

I have been given the task to analyse a contents page of a top music magazine. I decided to analyse the rock/punk magazine Kerrang as it is not a magazine that I usually go for which means that I would have a bigger challenge.
The reader straight away notices that this magazine belongs to the rock genre because of the images illustrated on the front page and contents page such as the various rock artists, who are very popular in this type of music genre, and also the word “rock” comes up quite frequently on the front cover.
I have noticed that the most poplar artist has images have been constructed larger then the other images. This is very effective as it makes reader more attracted to the magazine as they can see artist who they like more clearly.
Some of the images on the magazine have been shot so that the artists are looking straight at the reader, this is effective as it makes the magazine seem more personal as the magazine makes the reader think that they are have a small relationship with the artist as it looks like the reader is only looking at the reader and no one else.
Also there are images in which the artist are not looking at the reader but are as if they have been “caught in the moment” meaning that there are images are showing the artist in action and also images of them performing, this is also effective as it benefits the magazine and also the artist. It benefits the artist as it shows what work the artist does and whether or not they are a good at performing. It benefits the magazine as it makes the magazines seem more exclusive as it has pictures that you can only get a shot if you were at the actual event meaning that it is only this magazine that has these pictures.
The fonts that are used in the magazine suit this type of magazine genre for a number of reasons, such as the colour of the font is black and plain, this is good because the colour black is very common in the genre of rock music and if there was loads of different, bright colours this could give the magazine have a completely different view. It also matches the front cover as it using the same font and is also the same effects on the font such as the capital letters and the fact that all the writing is bold.
The editors of the magazine have also made most of the text in big, bold and in capital letters. Using capital letters in a rock magazine is very smart as capital letters can symbolise loudness, noise and can also be said to have a powerful impact.
I believe that the target audience is mostly aimed at teenagers and young adults as there are words that are on the contents page that is inappropriate for young children such as f**k and also the artist in the magazine are also mostly listened by people around this age group as some of their lyrics that the artists are saying are quite explicit and many young children would not particularly enjoy listening to.
The information on the contents page makes it very accessible to the audience as it very clear and is set in a very simple way: all the writing on one side and all the pictures on the other, also under each picture has a bit of information about the picture and the page number where you can read properly about the topic, which is very effective.
They have also displayed there freebies, in this case posters, also on the contents page. This is very useful as it makes it easier for the reader to get to them, because many people only buy a specific magazine for the freebies so announcing that the magazine comes with free posters on the front is very good and then telling the reader where to find on them contents page is even better and makes it much easier for the reader.
They have put a small image of the front cover on the contents page. Most magazine do this so that reader can see the front cover again once the turn the page to the contents, it is as if every page you go the front cover will be there. This could mean that the editors of the magazine believe that the front cover is so good they just put it on the next page to remind you of how brilliant it is. Another reason why they could of done this is so that you don’t need to turn over to remind yourself of what is on the front cover as you could just see the front cover on the contents which means that you save time and can look at the front cover and the contents at the same time.
Also right near the image of the front cover the editor of the magazine has left a little note for the reader, making the magazine seem more personal and gives a the reader a brief information on what you will find in the magazine.
Analasys Of Front Cover 2

The type of magazine that this is, is a hip–hop/ r’n’b. from the front cover the kinds of issues/articles that are going to be inside are the latest gossip and information involving black artists. Also articles on the male and female singers based on the music industry issues and basic facts.
The target audience for the magazine is all teenagers from the ages between 13 – 19 of that particular age group; their interests are mainly music and the good looking artists as a nice image of Usher is on the front cover a the main central image.
This tells you that the type of relationship it wants with the reader is close as it provides stuff that interests and fulfils their needs.
Usher is on the front cover as he is the main image of the main story also it relates to the title ‘Black Beat’ as he is a black artist who is very popular to the genre of the magazine which is hip-hop and r and b.
The anchorage text says that Usher shifts into Confessions mode. And there is more information about this underneath. It simply implies that the artist is popular and everyone wants to know about his break ups and new singles. He is the latest’s gossip that their target audience will find interesting.
The overall message that the artist is giving is that he is becoming serious about what he does which is singing and wants to become more popular as he confesses about he’s new CD inside that magazine.
The groups represented are B2K but without one singer, they are represented as a strong, still standing group as they move on from there fall-out.
There are ‘buzz’ words included. The effect that this has on the reader is that it makes the text that the reader’s are reading sound and seem better.
The design of the title block tells you that the magazine is popular and excellent as the title is more then able to see and understand as it is not covered by the image.
The title of the magazine tells us about the readership is that it is well understood, clear and interesting. It tells us that the image is attractive and poplar and also that the style is very exclusive and elegant.
The puffs suggest that exclusive stuff will be inside that magazine; this tells us that the type of audience the magazine expects to get is teenagers that will like this stuff.
The colours are pink, yellow, purple, black and red, these deep colours and attractive. The fonts that are used are large so that you can see them clearly and the words are easy to focus on.
The strategies that the magazine uses to attract the audience are the different colours and the layout as it not messy and very clear to see all the images and text.
