The title of the music magazine which I will be analysing is Kerrang!
This magazine is a rock genre magazine aimed at rock and heavy metal lovers. It has also been publishing for over 20yrs and has been known to a very attractive front cover.Just the way the publisher sets out the title is a very effective as it attracts the reader to purchase the magazine.
The title has been written in a big, bold and black effect, this makes the title eye-catching meaning that you will be able to spot the magazine from a far distance, there are various white lines going through the title which indicates that the title has been smashed or shattered. This is very powerful as it could mean that the title has been broken due to the loudness of the rock music.
The main image of the front cover is of a very popular band in the rock industry,Biffy Clyro. Having a band that is very well known as the main image on the front cover is very smart as it attracts more people buy the magazine as many people would like to find out exclusive information & gossip about the band.
This magazine has made the leader of the band stand out in various ways. One way is that the leader of the group has been placed on top on the title. This is trying to show that the leader has a dominant and over powering effect to the front cover that it even makes him be on top of the title which is known to be the most important thing on the front cover. They have even made him dress in a white outfit while the rest of the band is wearing black. This which makes him stand out even more and also gives the reader a more clearer idea of who the leader of the band is.
The publisher has also left clues on the main image that shows what the articles would be about. For example the singer has symbols and number on his left hand; this is to represent the bands latest album “puzzle”. This shows that the article about Biffy Clyro will be about their album. It is mostly the fans of the band that will understand this which gives the magazine a type of relationship between the reader and the magzine.
In the bar , which is at the top of the magazine, has mentioned one of its main selling points of the magazine. This is because they believe that people will read the bar first , as it is at the top, which will want to make the reader purchase the magazine as they would like to find out more information on what is on offer when you buy the magazine. Also as they have mentioned that they are giving away free concert tickets this attracts the reader even more as everyone like freebies and not only are they freebies but something that is exclusive and very hard to get.
The anchorage text tells the audience clearly that this is Biffy Clyro and this writing is almost as big as the title of the mag. Puzzle refers to the new album that is being promoted and again relies on the audiences’ knowledge of this album. Recognition for the audience comes from understanding this play on words.
This magazine aims to create a sense of community.Kerrang usually use dark and dull colours, this is because they want to reflect the colours to the type of music genre the magazine is. For example rock is described to be dark and black so the magazine usually creates the magazine colours based around the characteristics of rock and roll. Also making the background dark makes the artists on the front and the writing stand out which attracts more customers.
A main selling point that is a usual for “KERRANG!” is that they always offer free posters. This helps increase the number of sales of the magazine as many readers love the fact that the magazine gives free posters as the reader is able to stick them onto their bedroom wall or wherever they want. Also because Kerrang always give out different posters in every issue this gives the reader more choices and variety of posters that they like.
The puff in the magazine has been typed in all capitals letters, this is effective as it makes the word seem more exiting and makes the magazine more worth buying the magazine.Kerrang always adds a variety of artist at the bottom of the page; this is effective as it tells the reader what they would be able to find if they purchase the magazine. Also it is a good way to attract new buyers as people who may not usually buy the magazine can see an artist that they like in this issue so they might decide to buy it.
